K–5 General Music Teacher with 4th–8th Grade Choral Emphasis

Fanny Edel Falk Laboratory School, a coeducational K-8 school within the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh, is seeking a full-time music teacher beginning August 15, 2026.  

Position Summary

We seek an individual with a unique set of gifts and interests in both general music education and teaching chorus. The general music and choral teacher will be responsible for teaching 6th- to 8th-grade chorus, 4th- and 5th-grade chorus (organizing and conducting 2 concerts/year), and all K-5 general music classes. This individual will also co-direct Falk's beloved middle school spring musical.

Qualifications and Required Documents 

A Bachelor's degree is required. Teaching certification and a master's degree are preferred. Candidates should have successful teaching experience in an elementary and/or middle school music program. This individual must exhibit an authentic passion and enthusiasm for progressive education. Orff, Kodaly, or Dalcroze certification is a plus, but not necessary. Some piano proficiency is a plus.

Job Duties

Day-to-day job duties may vary depending on the changing needs of the classroom(s) and student(s):

  • Co-teaches and collaborates effectively with Band Director and other Falk Faculty
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about school personnel 
  • Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior
  • Executes instructional activities with individual students or small groups of students
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, instruments, and facilities 
  • Co-directs spring musical with Band Director
  • Collaborates with piano accompanist
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time 
  • Moderate lifting/moving of various items from 15-35 pounds.
  • Moving of various items – up to 30 pounds
  • Physical ability to use office equipment

Middle School Language Arts & History Teacher

Falk Laboratory School, a co-educational K-8 laboratory school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, seeks a full-time, experienced, and dynamic school librarian for the 2026-2027 academic year, beginning in August 2026.

Candidates should have successful teaching experience in middle or high school English/Language Arts and History/Social Studies classrooms. The educator filling these roles will be responsible for continuing to develop a program that features Progressive ideas about Language Arts and History instruction. Supports sixth-grade students' executive functioning and successful transition to MS by explicitly teaching organization, time management, note-taking, and self-advocacy skills; scaffolding long-term History and English projects; partnering closely with advisors and families to build student confidence, independence, and academic routines. The successful candidate will have a strong vision for dynamic approaches to Language Arts and History education, strong collaborative skills, and a willingness to support educational research. Strong skills in oral and written communication will be required to frame and present the complex world of Language Arts pedagogy to a variety of audiences.

Teaching Responsibilities

Responsible for teaching students for 170 school days during your contract period.

Service Responsibilities

Falk teachers are expected to contribute to program areas, including supporting program admissions, engaging in program development and revision, and meeting any PDE requirements (including accreditation). It is also expected that they contribute in other substantive ways to their department as needed.

Other Responsibilities

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in department and schoolwide faculty meetings
  • Securing and maintaining all necessary clearances (e.g., PA Child Abuse History), which require updates every 5 years
  • Being a collaborative partner with other faculty members

Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in teaching or a related field is preferred.
  • Current Pennsylvania state instructional certification or equivalent is required.
  • Either middle or high school teaching experience or equivalent coursework are required.
  • Broad experience is advantageous, as collaboration across disciplines and grade levels is valued at our school.
  • Highly creative work experience in the field of Language Arts and/or history is an asset.

School Nurse

Falk Laboratory School, a coeducational K-8 school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seeks one full-time School Nurse to care for students of all ages. The Falk School Nurse provides episodic medical care to students of all ages, facilitates positive student responses to normal development; promotes health and safety within the school; intervenes to address potential health problems through education and strategic planning; provides case management as needed; and actively collaborates with faculty and school leadership to build student and family capacity for self-advocacy and adaptation. This person will provide direct and consultative services in the school setting for diagnostic, preventative, and interventive purposes. This position will start August 15, 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Provides episodic care and first aid to ill or injured students.
  • Communicates with parents as needed about a student’s health
  • Administers medication
  • Organizes and conducts annual health screenings
  • Prepares medical and other reports
  • Maintains student health records
  • Coordinates the student assistance program
  • Mentors University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing students taking part in clinical rotations
  • Serves on the Student Services Committee
  • Facilitates health and safety meetings
  • Schedules and organizes fire drills and other emergency preparedness drills
  • Co-facilitates quarterly emergency management team meetings with the Director of Administrative Operations

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) with at least 5 years relevant experience or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with at least 3 years relevant experience required
  • Experience in a school or similar setting caring for children’s medical needs
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive health practices
  • Knowledge of emergency preparedness procedures preferred
  • Experience as a pediatric nurse in a school setting preferred

Educational Support Teacher (Behavior Intervention)

Falk Laboratory School, a coeducational K-8 school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seeks one full-time Behavior Intervention Teacher to work collaboratively with students, teachers, and families to help facilitate positive interactions within the school environment, allowing all students to integrate behaviorally into the school setting successfully. The Behavior Intervention Teacher has the training to address counterproductive behaviors in the school. This person will provide direct and consultative services in the school setting for diagnostic, preventative, and interventive purposes. In addition, the Behavior Intervention Teacher works directly with identified students to develop and self-sustain positive behaviors that support their growth academically and behaviorally. Under the supervision of the director of Student Services and Division directors, the Behavior Intervention Teacher will provide diversified strategies and activities specifically designed for identified students. This position will start in August 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with school personnel to communicate and uphold universal school expectations to effectively include social validity and equitable support.
  • Working with faculty to develop classroom practices that support student growth and engagement.
  • When necessary, identify, measure, and respond to challenging behaviors, including antecedents and follow-through.
  • Facilitating team meetings with the identified student's teachers and parents to complete a Functional Behavioral Assessment.
  • Attending regular Student Services team meetings and collaborating with other members (learning specialists, counselors, and the Director of Student Services) to determine effective plans for individual students.
  • Develop a repertoire of assessment strategies consistent with instructional goals, teaching methods, and individual student needs to assess student behavior skills and understandings accurately.
  • Establishing relationships and communicating with teachers, administrators, and family members.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting behavior in either a school or therapeutic setting.
  • Knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing positive interactions across all environments.
  • Knowledge of techniques needed to complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function–based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
  • Knowledge in using assessments and assessment data to inform instruction and prescribe work plans for individual students.
  • Ascribes to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make this a reality.
  • Demonstrates an inquiry stance approach to behavioral support.
  • Strong knowledge of culturally responsive practices.
  • Possesses training to take relevant data to help track and modify inappropriate behavior.
  • Prepared to develop, implement, and maintain a student data collection and progress monitoring system for students with behavior disorders and other exceptionalities.
  • A commitment to restorative practices, diversity, equity, and inclusion work are all assets.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's Degree in special education (or related field) preferred
  • Elementary/middle school experience is advantageous, and interesting work and/or educational experience in psychology and counseling is beneficial for the position.
  • Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis is a plus
